Performance Exhaust Systems, Mufflers and Headers

A good exhaust does three things: it frees up flow so the engine can make more power, it cuts weight compared to the heavy factory system, and it gives your car or truck the sound it should have had from the start. Choosing the right system. An axle-back replaces only the mufflers and tips, so it is the easiest install and the mildest change in sound. A cat-back replaces everything behind the catalytic converter for the biggest gain in flow and tone you can get without touching emissions equipment. Headers and downpipes add the most power, but check whether they are legal for street use in your state before you order. For material, aluminized steel is the budget choice, 409 stainless resists rust well for daily drivers, and 304 stainless lasts the longest and polishes up the best.

Sound and drone. Louder is not always better on a vehicle you drive every day. If you spend a lot of time on the highway, look for systems with resonators or a chambered muffler design to keep cabin drone down at cruising speed.
