A 315/80R17 stands about 36.8 inches tall and 12.4 inches wide, the metric version of a 37x12.50R17. Pairing a 37 inch tire with a 17 inch wheel gives you a tall sidewall, which is exactly what you want off road: more flex when you air down, more cushion over rocks and less chance of damaging a rim. It is a go-to size for built Jeep Wranglers, Gladiators and lifted trucks on 17s.

Nitto Ridge Grappler 315/80R17
The Ridge Grappler is Nitto's hybrid tread, built to split the difference between an all-terrain and a mud-terrain. A variable pitch pattern keeps highway noise down, and the open shoulders still bite in dirt, gravel and light mud. It is the best fit for a rig that is driven daily and wheeled on weekends. This size is a load range D light truck tire with a 124 load index.

The Trail Grappler is a true mud-terrain with deep voids and heavy shoulder lugs that clean out in mud and claw over rock. Nitto tuned it to ride quieter than a traditional mud tire, so the drive to the trailhead stays tolerable. Choose it if you spend serious time off pavement. This size is a load range D light truck tire with a 124 load index.

A lift is required. On a Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator, plan on at least a 2.5 to 3.5 inch lift and some fender or flare work for a 37. Full size trucks typically need a 4 to 6 inch lift.
Check brake and wheel clearance. Not every factory brake setup clears a 17 inch wheel, so confirm your wheel fits over your calipers before ordering. A 17x8.5 to 17x9 wheel is the common pairing.
Gearing. A 37 inch tire is a big jump from stock. Re-gearing the axles restores acceleration and keeps your transmission happy, especially if you tow.
