The right tires make a bigger difference on an ATV or UTV than almost any other upgrade. If you ride in mud, clay or wet trails, you need a tire with deep lugs that cleans out fast. Two of the most popular choices are the Maxxis Zilla and the Maxxis Carnivore. Here's how they compare and how to pick the right size.
Maxxis Zilla: The Mud Specialist
The Zilla has been a go-to mud tire for years. Its deep, widely spaced directional lugs dig through mud and fling it out so the tire doesn't pack up. It's light for its size, which helps acceleration and keeps strain off your clutch and drivetrain.
- Best for: deep mud, swamps, wet clay, soft trails
- Bias-ply construction with a good mix of grip and toughness
- Available in a wide range of sizes for 10, 12 and 14 inch wheels
Maxxis Carnivore: The All-Terrain Brawler
The Carnivore is a radial tire built for aggressive all-around use. It has a tough 8-ply rated casing that resists punctures in rocks, and a tread that still clears mud well. If you ride a mix of rocks, hardpack and mud, it's a great choice.
How to Read ATV Tire Sizes
ATV and UTV tires are usually listed like 25x11-10:
- 25 = overall tire height in inches
- 11 = tire width in inches
- 10 = wheel (rim) diameter in inches
Many machines run different sizes front and rear, so check your owner's manual or the sidewall of your current tires.
Going Bigger?
Taller tires add ground clearance, but they also raise gearing and put more load on your clutch and axles. On many machines a 1 to 2 inch increase is fine. Beyond that, think about a clutch kit, lift or gear reduction.
