Where to start. A cold air intake is the classic first mod. It replaces the restrictive factory airbox with a freer flowing filter and tube, adds a better sound, and on many vehicles bolts in without a tune. A tuner or programmer is the biggest single gain on most modern engines, adjusting fuel, timing and shift points, and it lets you correct the speedometer after a tire size change. Throttle bodies and intake upgrades pay off most when paired with a tune.

Build as a system. Parts work best when they are chosen together: intake, exhaust and tune on a street build, or cam, intake manifold and carburetor or fuel injection on a classic engine. Check emissions legality for your state before ordering, since some parts are for off road or racing use only.
